Macular degeneration aids for the kitchen can keep you cooking your meals, making your coffee, cleaning up and entertaining friends and family. There are many helpful gadgets and tips that will allow you to keep cooking and entertaining others in your home.
Start with organizing your kitchen and have an uncluttered and clean space to do your cooking.
Put your cooking ingredients in jars and place easy to read labels on them. Purchase white stick on labels and write with a bold black pen the name of what's in your canisters - sugar, flour, oatmeal, etc. Label your spice jars as well.
Some links in the following sections are eBay or Amazon affiliate links, which means that if you purchase a product through them I receive a small commission. There is no extra cost to you. Find more details on this page.
Use easy to identify low vision measuring cups and spoons and keep them in the same spot so you can easily find them.
The contrasting bold and large black numbers on white measuring cups makes it easy to see.
Use large print or talking cook books for cooking instructions and recipes. What I love about my Amazon Fire tablet is the ability to download recipe books or browse for recipes on line.
The colored images are easy to see and the ability to enlarge the font
or adjust the brightness and contrast makes it easy to follow any
recipe.
Set the color combination to black lettering on white background or white lettering on a black background.
√ Bold Number or Voice Activated Timers
Large white numbers on a contrasting black background makes it easy to set a timer to bake or cook your favorite foods.
The Amazon Echo Dot is now my go-to timer. It is voice activated so all you
have to say is, "Alexa, set the timer for 30". She will repeat the
instructions back to you, "30 minutes starting now" so you can verify if
she got it right. In 30" you will hear a pleasant repetitive sound
until you turn it off.
You simply say, "Alexa, Stop" to turn off the timer. You can ask Alexa cooking questions like "How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?" or "How many cups are in a quart?"
If you just used your last egg, you can say, "Alexa, add eggs to my shopping list.
You do need WiFi for the Echo to work.
√ Raised Tactile Bumps for the Stove, Oven, Microwave or Dishwasher
A set of mixed bump dots is a simple low-tech way to get the right settings on your stove, dishwasher or microwave.
They are raised sticky-back buttons placed on frequently used settings. Using your sense of touch rather than sight will eliminate a lot of frustration.
Place a mixed bump dot on the dishwasher start button, the microwave 1 minute setting, medium setting on your stove and bake or/and start button of your oven.

√ Using Contrast or Color in the Kitchen

On line grocery shopping can reduce the frustration of selecting from the myriad of choices in a large grocery store. Even as a sighted person with perfectly good vision, it's often hard to even find the right aisle for my grocery product.
I have used several on line grocery shopping services. One membership that I have kept for several years is Thrive Market.
If you are interested in organic and non-GMO foods as well as supplements they consistently have the lowest prices compared to my local grocery stores or Amazon.
For convenience and for cost savings, consider buying your cooking ingredients on-line.
As an Amazon Prime member I get my products delivered for free with a yearly membership of $139. It saves me lots of trips to the grocery store.
This benefit includes unlimited FREE Two-Day Shipping on millions of items with no minimum order size. I buy my goji berries, baking goods, oatmeal, nuts, coconut oil, and olive oil to name a few.
To save even more money try the Subscribe and Save option - you don't have to select delivery every month - it can be every 3-4 months - but the savings can be up to 15%.
